Far from the uproar in places like Delhi, where groups of activists have held protest marches, Makhi, the victim’s village has a completely different atmosphere. “Vidhayak Ji can do no wrong “, says one person from a group of villagers. We know enough about Sengar’s background, lets learn more about the victim’s family.

Victim’s Father: Villagers claim that he was an alcoholic and was associated to drugs which often became the reason for his tussle with the locals. He started working for his brother’s wire factory in Delhi after 2015.

Victim’s Uncle : “Master mind” behind this case said a villager who doesn’t want to be named. He was a resident of Makhi, Unnao until 2000 when a case was filed against him for attempt to murder. Declared absconding by the Uttar Pradesh police, he is settled in Delhi ever since, owning several wire factories. Claiming on a news channel recently that he has a “turnover of over 25 crores” and it was only a non bailable warrant issued by the court last year in this case that led the Uttar Pradesh police to finally arrest him.

The most shocking statement we got from one of the villagers was “news mein bol rahe biwi mar gayi, RTI daalo biwi nahi thi”. Also amid various allegations there have been claims that he was a close aide to Neeraj Bawana and Rambir Shokeen,a convicted MLA who is known for his trickery and muscle.

Tales of the closeness and then a bitter rivalry between Sengar and victim’s family are folklore in Makhi. Not many people have good things to say about the victim’s family. In Makhi most villagers dismiss the rape charges against the MLA. A villager asked, “why the girl had not mentioned that she was raped or named the MLA in her statement recorded before a magistrate in July?” A few who do sympathise with the victim’s family say “it may have been a family of criminals and history sheeters but the family has been wiped out.”
